Meet Akuechbeny Kuol Akuechbeny Chirong

SPLM Aspirant for Member of Parliament, Tonj East Constituency No. 11, Warrap State. Cattle herder. Refugee. Teacher. Scholar. Public servant. Builder.

His story

Rooted in Tonj East

Akuechbeny was born in Wunyiik, Wunlit Payam, and raised from a young age by his maternal family in Luacjang. As a boy he herded cattle across Tonj East, in Luacjang, Jalwua, Thiik, Akok and Luackoth. He knows our land, our cattle camps and our people because he lived among them.

Tested by loss

He lost both of his parents to a family conflict. Instead of choosing revenge, he chose education, and that choice shaped everything that followed.

Refugee and teacher

As a refugee in Kakuma, Kenya, he earned top grades in primary and secondary school. He then taught Biology and Chemistry at a secondary school in Kenya for two years, helping other refugee students build their futures.

Scholar

A merit scholarship took him to the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada. There he helped lead a student referendum, won with 63% of the vote, that doubled refugee scholarship funding, opening doors for the students who came after him. He graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Operations and Logistics Management, with a Minor in Law and Society.

Came home to build

He co-founded Naicouba Institute of Technology, which he led as Managing Director from 2019 to 2025, and FFEES, which he led as Executive Director from 2022 to 2025. He has helped more than 100 children from Tonj East into school. In 2025 he built and equipped a community centre in Wunlit; it was looted and destroyed in conflict later that year, and rebuilding it is part of his plan.

Public servant

Since October 2025 he has served as Deputy Commissioner for Strategy and Risk Management at the South Sudan Revenue Authority, working on how our country raises and manages public money.
