Seven commitments for peace and progress
1. A council of spiritual and religious leaders
About 40 members, including women and youth, meeting every quarter in Romic, with a peace committee in each of the 15 Payams.
2. The Tonj East Peace Covenant
Sealed in the traditional way: spiritual leaders give arop and blessings for herds, homes, harvests, schooling and safe travel, never for raids or revenge.
3. Health first, protection always
People who believe they are bewitched are encouraged to visit a clinic, and no one may be harmed, expelled or made to pay because of an accusation without a hearing in a chiefs’ court or magistrate court.
4. Champions of modernization
Spiritual and religious leaders bless and support farms, schools, clinics, courts and roads.
5. Peace and Heritage Day at Wunlit
Held every year, with an oral history of our elders and spearmasters.
6. Early warning
Leaders are linked to security posts and the county, with a response team on site within 48 hours.
7. Faiths working together
Joint peace messages, healing after conflict and a warm welcome for returnees, with every faith respected equally.
